Week of May 9th

I hope all the wonderful mothers had a relaxing, enjoyable family day on Sunday.Unknown-2

REMINDERS:

Friday, May 13th is our Jump Rope for Heart event.  I sent an email home for this, and I thank you for your donations (all optional of course).  Donations can be made online.

Thursday, May 19th is our class walking trip to Sobey’s.  I will be sending home a permission form this week.  There is no cost involved and the trip will take place from 12-2 p.m..

701e34f38a8c60570d7d06d09a754369Yoga is coming to South March.  I sent home a flyer for family yoga, and each class will also be having a yoga session during the week of May 16th.  Namaste.

In Language, we continue to review common French phonetic sounds as well as high frequency words.  The children continue to work on small group book studies at their reading levels.  This week we will be refocusing our energy on daily written work with an emphasis on building strategies to spell common words correctly and to build simple sentences with correct grammar and punctuation.  The children have made many gains in their writing skills since September.  In Oral Communication, the children participate in a weekly readers’ theatre presentation and are expected to be speaking in French to express themselves in class.  While it’s natural for the children to revert to English from time to time, at this point in the year my expectation is that they speak in French as close to 100 percent of the instructional day as possible.

In Math, we will continue to explore number sense as it relates to grouping, estimating, and creating and solving number problems. I will also be introducing liquid measurement activities.
In Social Studies, we will revisit our unit on our community as we prepare for our trip to Sobey’s.  In Drama, we are taking a close look at the elements of theatre and live drama based on our school play.

As the weather heats up, it’s helpful if you (or even better your child) remember(s) to pack a water bottle on a regular basis, apply sunscreen, and wear a sun hat.

Have a great week everyone!

Week of April 25th

The children had a busy week with lots of learning opportunities. In honour of Earth Week, we had a number of school wide activities as well as lots of classroom Earth based activities.

On Monday, the school had an outdoor picnic for nutrition break.  Later in the week, there was a yard cleanup, a special recycling event, and a book exchange. In class, the children read and wrote about ways to protect our planet and what they love about our planet. They also participated in making a video for Earth Day.

We did not have library last week due to the book fair. I have returned the books to the library that were brought in on Thursday, and we will resume library visits this week.

In Language for the next two weeks, our main focus will be on reviewing 35 of the most common vowel or consonant combinations in French as well as about 225 of the most commonly used French words at the primary reading level. We will also be working on small group reading studies. Continued reading at home really makes a difference, as it allows the children to practise and consolidate the reading strategies we have worked on in class. You are welcome to swap out reading books with me as often as you wish. The public library and online resources are also wonderful ways to increase your child’s exposure to French reading. Once again, our Board’s grade one target is a level 9 or 10 by June. Your child should have a very good idea of his or her reading level. If not, please feel free to contact me. At this point in April, a child who is reading at a level 7 or above is en route to achieving a level 9 or above in June.

We are almost finished our unit on measurement, and will be starting a new unit on numeration (number sense) this week.

Thinking ahead, I have planned a walking trip to Sobey’s the afternoon of Thursday, May 19th. Volunteers are welcome, so you may want to mark this on your calendar if you are interested now. More details will be sent home next week. This trip is always a hit with the children, and an excellent way to finish our studies on our community- the places and people.

For the next two weeks, we will be taking a close look at Drama themes, as our school presents a spring musical called We are Monsters. The children will get an up close look at the different elements of drama and I know they will enjoy the play!  We Are Monsters logo

Here’s a song for spring:

Have  a great week everyone!

Week of March 29

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend together.  Here are the details for this week:

Language: We will continue with our word study work and are focusing on a review of the vowel sounds we have learned to date, as well as reviewing and mastering the most common grade one sight words.  Building instant recognition of sight words is an important reading skill and one we work to master in grade one as this goal helps build fluency and comprehension.  We will continue with our group book studies.  The children spend time in small groups working on books at their reading levels, and we usually present the books as a read aloud at the end of the week.

Social Studies: We will be leaving our study of Energy (but will revisit it closer to Earth Day), and will be focusing on learning about our community.  I start this unit by working together to create a big map of our neighborhood.  Please take a moment to review your address with your child.  Building a map together integrates very well with many of the math concepts we will be studying this month.

I plan to finish up our math unit on number patterns this week.

Drama: I try to integrate drama into many of our activities through either video making, short presentations, readers’ theatre presentations, skits, and more.  The children have really enjoyed the short readers’ theatre presentations we have done recently, and I have sent home a few of the scripts.

Here are some photos of a bunny stencil sponge painting and mixed media project.

Have a great week everyone.  Looks like the week ahead holds rain and some warmer temperatures (which means mud and puddles).  Please dress accordingly.

Week of April 27

Monday was a great day! Thanks to the moms of Kira, Hafsa, Niko and Deen for helping us on our spring walking trip. We observed lots of sights and sounds of spring and had a fun play at the park to finish off.

The children also brought home their plants they started at school. Thanks Maya for sending in the seeds and pots for everyone!

We watched the almost done class video of our Super Héros! I took video of them on a green screen as they wore a super héros cape and told how they could save the planet. We had lots of fun finishing up this part of our media literacy unit.

For the next two weeks we will be completing an author study of Todd Parr. We will also be taking a close look at the different elements of drama as we learn about all the plans that went into our school musical, as well as attending our school play and making first hand observations and connections with drama.  We are also reviewing all the sounds we have learned this year to help with our reading and writing development.

We are finishing up our unit on figures and have been taking a close look at lines of symmetry and how figures can be the same and different.

We are starting our unit on the community and will be taking a close look at the map of our neighbourhood.  We will be discussing the different community helpers and have a visit from a fire fighter and police officer taking place in the next few weeks.  I’ve also confirmed our walking trip to Sobey’s (always a hit with the children and parents) on Friday, May 22.  More details to follow.

Have a great week everyone.
